Top 5 hikes near Provo, Utah

5 – Rock Canyon Cave

  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • How to get to Rock Canyon Cave: To the East of Pleasent View get on E 2300 N until you see signs for the Rock Canyon Trailhead
  • Time duration of Hike: 3 hours, 27 minutes
  • Length: 5.7 Miles
  • Elevation gain: 1,722 Feet

  • Rock Canyon Cave rocks…. Seriously check it out, 
  • There are wonderful views, great bridges, and as long as you have good weather, it’s a guaranteed fun time
  • Even if you’re not an avid hiker, you’ll probably be able to hike Rock Canyon Cave considering it’s just a bit above easy in terms of difficulty
  • Along the journey, you’ll see many beautiful flowers, mountains, unique geology, eccentric bridges, and wonderful sunsets.

4 – Slate Canyon Trail

  • Difficulty level: Hard
  • How to get to Slate Canyon Trail: Head to S Slate Canyon Drive which is South East of the Utah State Hospital. Turn on the road North of E Aspen Loop and you’ll see signs for The Slate Canyon Trail
  • Time duration of Hike: The average person takes roughly 6 hours to complete this trail
  • Length: 8.5 miles
  • Elevation gain: 3,349 feet

  • Slate Canyon Trail is one of those trails that surprise you more and more the further you go
  • On this trail you can actually Hike, go horseback riding and mountain bike.
  • Though it’s longer than many trails, it will not feel like it. Unless of course you are not used to hiking trails… Then you are most definitely going to feel it, particularly in your legs
  • This trail can be tough to get up but the higher you get the more rewards you reap 
  • Overall in my opinion, Slate Canyon Loop had to be included in my top 5 hikes near Provo, Utah. Particularly because this is an astounding loop. Loops are my favorite type of trails considering you do not have to walk back the miles you just walked.

3 – Upper Falls Park

  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • How to get to Upper Falls Park: This trail is North East of Canyon Glen. Head on 189 and get off at Provo Canyon Road 
  • Time duration of Hike: The average person takes roughly 30 minutes to finish this trail
  • Length: 0.6 miles
  • Elevation gain: 282 feet
  • More information: Upper Falls Park
  • This hike is going to knock your socks off… literally
  • This, in my opinion, is the easiest trail on my list of top 5 hikes near Provo, Utah. Especially considering not only how easy it is to traverse but the fact that it’s nearly half a mile!
  • Pay attention and you’ll have a wonderful 2-minute hike! All jokes aside this hike will go by quickly and sometimes you need a short hike because you may only have 30 minutes to an hour to spend 
  • Please, you don’t have to do any of the other hikes but at least do this short one. Yes you will have to drive a bit out of Provo but it’s quick and you can make it worth your while to a considerably easy extent

2 – Utah Lake Shore Line Trailhead

  • Difficulty level: Easy 
  • How to get to Utah Lake Shore Line Trailhead: The entrance to this trail is directly North West of The Provo Airport 
  • Time duration of Hike: The average person takes roughly 3 hours to complete this trail
  • Length: 10.2 miles
  • Elevation gain: 42 feet

  • Here are my two all-time favorite trails anywhere around the Provo, Utah area
  • If you don’t enjoy hiking in an upward manner, you’re going to be obsessed with this 10-mile hike. There is a whopping 42 feet of elevation, meaning this trail is nearly completely flat
  • Don’t tell anyone but this may actually be my favorite hike on the list (and I do love hills) 
  • The only potential downside of this trail is that it’s near the airport. Which may be far from you. However, besides you won’t have an issue showing this trail some serious temerity considering how easy it is.
  • Just remember how long the actual trail is so you don’t miss a flight or other plans. An easy way to calculate this is to figure out how much free time you actually have and when you start the trail begin a timer on your phone.
Buffalo Peak

1 – Buffalo Peak

  • Difficulty level: Moderate
  • How to get to Buffalo Peak: Get on 189 North of Provo and switch to Squat Peak Road. Head South until you see signs for the Buffalo Peak Trail
  • Time duration of Hike: The average person takes roughly half an hour to complete this trail
  • Length: 0.9 miles
  • Elevation gain: 275 feet

  • Are you ready for the finale, my absolute favorite hiking trial on the planet… Okay, maybe just around the Provo, Utah area. However, that is still saying quite a lot.
  • The reason Buffalo Peak tops my list for Top 5 hikes near Provo, Utah is simply because of the sheer amount of world-class views and photos you will be able to take here. All the while the trail is not even a mile with less than 300 feet of elevation gain! This trail is what dreams are made of
  • This trail to me is a non-negotiable. If you are near Provo, please take the time which is a fraction of many of these hikes to create some memories by taking this trail
  • Let’s just say people come here to take their wedding photos
  • For parking remember that there isn’t parking directly at the trail entrance. You need to park a few hundred feet North of the trail entrance
