5. El Chichonal

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • How to get to El Chichonal: Head South West of Pichucalco and Ixtacomitán. Go to the town of Chapultenango, head on Primera Sur the entire way and you will find it
  • Duration of hike: The average person takes roughly 4 hours to complete this hike
  • Trail length: 7.1 miles
  • Elevation: 2,007 feet
  • More information: El Chichonal 
  • The beginning might be difficult to find depending on when you start trekking. I recommend starting when daylight is running hot
  • You may run into people on this trail so if you do not enjoy the presence of other humans, I have included other trails
  • This is an active volcano that last erupted in 1982. You will obtain many memories by hiking on this grande trail
  • When it comes to Chiapas hiking, you cannot go wrong with this marvel of a trial

4. Circuito Las Canastas

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • How to get to Circuito Las Canastas: Head East of San Cristóbal de las Casas. You can get here by taking a right off of Calz. de la Quinta 
  • Duration of hike: The average person takes roughly 2 and a half hours to complete this trail
  • Trail length: 4.2 miles
  • Elevation: 1,099 feet
  • More information: Circuito Las Canastas 
  • This is 1 of 2 loop trails on the list, I would obviously recommend them immediately because of the mere beauty along with seeing different scenery throughout the hike
  • The route isn’t always marked so be aware of that and be mindful of how amazing the forest on this trail is
  • Enter the park and then you will find many areas in which you can park your vehicle
  • If you love trees, and forests, this trail is completely for you

3. Cerro Don Lauro

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • How to get to Cerro Don Lauro: Take the same directions as the last hike but this time go off of Insurgentesand you will see it
  • Duration of hike: The average person takes roughly 1 hour to complete the trail
  • Trail length: 1.3 mile
  • Elevation: 669 feet
  • More information: Cerro Don Lauro 
  • This may not be a loop trail but I would say it’s the most undemanding trail on the entire list. If you are a beginner, try this trail out first
  • On this trail, you’ll be able to go rock climbing, view incredible flowers, and go bird watching
  • The trail is uphill but it’s not very steep and you will find very worthwhile views at the end of the trail
  • Overall I would recommend this trail highly. However, it wouldn’t be my first choice

2. Parque El Encuentro

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • How to get to Parque El Encuentro: For this trail, you will also head in the direction East of San Cristóbal de las Casas. The trail is off of Periférico Oriente Sur, you will see it, there’s a large wooden circle. 
  • Duration of hike: The completion of this trail on average takes roughly 2 hours
  • Trail length: 3.0 miles
  • Elevation: 902 feet
  • More information: Parque El Encuentro 
  • This is the second loop trail on the list. You’ll love this trail because it’s different from the rest of the trails in that it includes a well-presented ravine
  • When it comes to Chiapas hiking, you will be hard-pressed to find trails that are similar to this one
  • Not only do you have the ability to camp, walk dogs, and view rivers on this trail… you also have the luxurious conveniences of bathrooms
  • I would highly recommend this trail in terms of Chiapas hiking if you are looking for something a bit different than the usual hiking trail but not too far off the scale of normality

1. Cascadas El Chiflón Norte

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • How to get to Cascadas El Chiflón Norte: Head East of San Vicente la Mesilla, you will see a large border indicating this trail off Highway 226
  • Duration of hike: The average person takes around 2 hours to complete this trail
  • Trail length: 2.7 miles
  • Elevation: 974 feet
  • More information: Cascadas el Chiflón Sur 
  • On this trail, you will be going through one of the most beautiful jungles that our mortal eyes could possibly capture 
  • I had to include this trial as number one on my list of the top 5 best hiking trails in Chiapas because of not only how magnificent the actual trail is but on top of that it includes a benevolent waterfall
  • If I had to recommend you one single trail around Chiapas, it would always be this trial. It’s too good to be true to be quite honest with you
  • Be very careful to avoid slipping on wet surfaces because the trail can seem as if it’s easily navigable. However, this is not always such an easy task
