In this quick guide, I’ll teach you some tips on how you can not only travel cheap but effectively also. Sometimes traveling can be difficult because we’re in a place that we’ve never been but check out these tips and going forward you’ll have a much easier time.
- Saving
- This is what I like to call save to travel, where you are working a job and saving for the future of your traveling lifestyle.
- Don’t travel immediately
- Work and save to travel instead
- Over a long period of time save as much as you can
- Once you’ve worked and saved enough, you can travel.
- Just keeping saving, save to travel.
- Work
- Work while you’re traveling!
- If you’re really a go-getter you can save to travel and THEN work while you’re traveling.
- You’re working while traveling in exchange for nourishment and accommodation
- A lot of the jobs you can easily find will be on farms and dealing with vegetables.
- I’ve done a bit of this in the past and will probably end up doing it in the future. You never know what kind of work you can find when you’re traveling.
- One thing you can usually always find is teaching your local language
- Frugality
- This may sound obvious but be cheap!
- A lot of us are victims to being cheap 65% of the time and then all of sudden.. “Oh this is just one little splurge” That one splurge turns into 50 and before you know it you’re out of money!
- Be very diligent when it comes to your expenses because it’s easy to forget about it
- I will admit from time-to-time I still do this. However, as time goes on I’m doing it less. Soon I will probably end up tattooing parsimonious on my forehead, then again I’d only remember to be cheap in the mirror.
- Cruises
- This can be a very lucrative way to travel.
- You can earn money, have fun and travel all at the same time!
- It’s not all sunshine and daisies though! You work very long hours, there are contracts involved, very little privacy, those days off on the jobs you used to have are gone, potential sea sickness, and possibly homesickness.
- If hearing that made you sick then working on a cruiseship probably isn’t for you.
- On the flip side, if none of those hypotheticals bother you, you’re probably a great fit for it!
- Couchsurfing
- Couchsurfing was much easier prior to the epidemic, now not only are people a lot more hesitant with letting you stay on their couch… But the actual platform has changed a lot also.
- I would say still give it a try, you can try other platforms like Airbnb, Trustroots, Warmshowers, and bewelcome.
- I will still continue to have high hopes for platforms similar to Couchsurfing, try it out if you’re comfortable with the other party. Trust your intuition.
- Locals
- Talk to locals about the city you’re in
- They have been in the city for a long, long time and can guide you with what you’re looking for.
- This is something I wish I would have gained the confidence and figured out sooner
- Talking to locals not only makes your trip more efficient but it enhances the overall experience as well.
- I will say if people look sketchy, avoid them. I cannot tell you how many pseudo nice locals turned into convincing drug dealers I’ve met in my travels.
- Supplies
- Figure out all of the supplies you use over and over again.
- I’m talking about supplies as in things like toiletries. Stuff you buy over and over again.
- Try to find cheap places to buy these things. Keep going back to these places instead of buying them in more expensive areas.
- You would be blown away how much you can spend on supplies in the long run.
- This could absolutely be a general rule, but don’t over think it.
- Health
- Always bring a first aid kit, this one is perfect.
- Not only will this save you money on the long run, it could save your life!
- A first aid kid is imperative for traveling. No matter what kind of philosophy you’re attempting to have to negate the necessity for a first aid kit.
- Wild and unexpected things can arise when traversing the planet. Don’t underestimate the value of a simple first aid kit.
- Umbrellas
- This is one of the most important items you’ll ever buy for traveling
- Buy a good umbrella, like this one with a lifetime warranty
- At first having the umbrella on this list might surprise you. However. It’s quite imperative you get a decent umbrella. Take it from a guy that at first bought every cheap umbrella and kept getting stranded out in rain with a broken umbrella…
- Having a good umbrella makes you feel secure and comfortable
- Backpack
- Buy a great backpack for your needs
- How long are you traveling?
- If you’re traveling for a long time, a backpack like this might suit your needs
- If you’re traveling for a medium (under 2 months) length of time this will be wonderful for you
- If you’re just going for a quick session, this backpack should work wonders for your needs.
- Backpacks are a staple of traveling and should be treated as such!
- If you have a bad backpack it could destroy your trip. Your trip could also be ruined if you get your backpack stolen like I have.
- Having the safeguards available so you’re in a more dependable and reliable state of mind is the ultimate goal.
